The Hospice Aide works under the supervision of an RN and performs various services for a patient as necessary to meet the patients’ personal needs and to promote comfort. The Hospice Aide is responsible for observing the patient, reporting these observations, and documenting observations and care performed. Responsible for providing a safe environment for the patients and visitors.
Essential Job Functions/Responsibilities
- Reporting to RN on duty or Patient Care Coordinator at the beginning of each shift/day and reviewing each patient’s Plan of Care
- Performing personal care needs following the Plan of Care and RN assignments, attending to the patient’s requests promptly
- If unable to perform a certain task promptly reports to the RN. Personal care may include, baths, back rubs, oral hygiene and shampoos, assistance in dressing/undressing and feeding patients
- Assisting in activities of daily living (ADL) activities including ambulation (stand-by assist or transferring), dressing/bathing, eating, toileting (helping with bedpans and urinals)
- Providing total care to bedbound and dying patients as assigned
- Meeting safety needs of patients and using equipment safely and properly (wheelchair, side rails, O2, bedside table, bedside commode, shower chair, transfer belt mechanical lifts, etc.)
- Taking and recording vital signs (oral, rectal, and axillary temperatures, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure), performing simple range of motion or other simple procedures as assigned
- Performing simple non-sterile dressing changes following the Hospice Aide Plan of Care as well as Foley catheter care and postmortem care
- Collecting specimens as directed
- Reporting on the patient's condition and changes to the RN
- Aware of the caregiver or other individuals living with the patient and interpersonal issues
- Immediately reporting any suspicion of neglect/abuse
- Providing light housekeeping including, changing bed linens, laundry and preparing simple meals
- Documenting as assigned (care provided, food/liquid intake/output, etc.)
- Respecting the needs of the patient and family, sensitive to cultural diversity
- Always providing a calm and caring manner with patients and family members
- Performing other duties and responsibilities as assigned
Position Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)
Education/Training
- High school diploma preferred
- Completed a Certified Nursing Assistant program approved by the State or a hospice aide training program.
- A minimum of 16 hours of classroom training must precede a minimum of 16 hours of practical training as part of the 75 hours
Experience
- Two years of nurse aide experience in hospice, home health, hospital, or the other healthcare facility preferred
License/Certification
- Current HI CNA certification required.
- Possess and maintain current CPR certification.
- Valid driver’s license (Community Hospice Aides only)
An equivalent combination of education and experience, which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed above, may be substituted for the above education and experience requirements.

Physical Demands:
- Frequently is required to walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach forward with hands and arms; bend and lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and may occasionally move 100 pounds
- Occasionally required to sit, and stoop, kneel, or crouch
- Vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
- Must be able to ambulate on stairs and uneven ground in order to visit patient homes
Working Environment:
- Work is performed in a variety of settings (patient homes, Hospice Hale, community facilities)
- Exposure to bodily fluids, infectious diseases, and odors
- Traffic when working in the community
Continuing Education Requirements:
- Participate in appropriate continuing education as required
- Accept personal responsibility for other educational activities to enhance job-related skills and abilities
- Attend mandatory educational programs
