POSITION DESCRIPTION: The In-Home Behavioral Specialist (IHBS) provides numerous essential support services to clients and their caregiver/families. At The Village Family Services an In-Home Behavioral Specialist (IHBS) may be known as a Rehabilitation Specialist, Rehab Specialist, Child & Family Specialist, In-Home Support Counselor, Mental Health Rehabilitation Specialist.
The IHBS, using a team based approach, is responsible for providing direct rehabilitative mental health services to clients with severe emotional and/or mental health challenges. Utilizing the Core Practice Model (CPM) principles, the IHBS will support clients primarily in the home with intensive, individualized, strength-based, and needs driven intervention activities that support the engagement and participation of the client and significant support persons. The IHBS is an integral part of the support team, assisting the client to develop skills and self-sufficiency to achieve the goals and objectives of the care plan. Clients may be in the custody of the Child Welfare Department, Probation, removed from families of origin, in the process of adoption, or in transition to independent living programs.
REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:
- A bachelor's degree in a social science related field and at least 6 months of experience in working with emotionally disturbed clients or clients who have a serious behavioral problem; OR
- an Associate’s degree in a social science related field and at least 1 year of experience in working with emotionally disturbed clients or clients who have a serious behavioral problem.
- Knowledge of prevailing governmental laws and regulations regarding the provision of mental health services, including confidentiality, the reporting of child abuse and neglect and related regulations
- Bilingual (Spanish/English)
- Valid California driver’s license
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Provide in-home direct services to clients/families and one-on-one services to the client as needed.
2. Establish positive and supportive relationship with client and his or her family/caretaker and maintain appropriate and professional boundaries.
3. Respond to client crisis 24 hours a day 7 days a week under supervisors’ guidance.
4. Provide medically necessary, skill-based interventions for remediation of behaviors or improvement of symptoms and as needed assist significant supports in implementing the intervention strategies.
5. Assist the client with development of functional skills to maintain safety, housing stability, improve self-care, self-regulation, self-management and/or other functional impairments.
6. Communicate with teachers, clinicians, parents, community workers and others directly involved in the client’s treatment plan to address the client needs advocating for stabilizing services and connecting the client to beneficial resources within the community.
7. Participate in the development and implementation of care such as behavioral plans and treatment goals through child and family team meetings with the client and significant supports.
8. Maintain accurate, thoroughly documented client records with a quality of documentation that meets or exceeds both The Village Family Services and DMH standards.
9. Submit all documentation within agency documentation policy guidelines.
10. Maintain client confidentiality as per agency standards.
11. Willingness to travel throughout LA County to provide field based services in homes, field, schools.
12. Attend regularly scheduled staff meetings, weekly supervisions and other meetings as assigned.
13. Conduct all functions in accordance with Agency guidelines, policies and procedures
14. Comply with applicable professional licensing, certification, and ongoing training requirements.
15. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
16. Arrange work schedule or required hours to the benefit of the Agency with the approval of the Supervisor.
