A. Overall Purpose Of The Job
The Operating Room (OR) Nurse provides professional nursing care to patients undergoing surgery. Responsibilities include preparing and maintaining the operating room for all surgical procedures, circulating and scrubbing for surgeries, and responding to surgical emergencies such as cardiac, pulmonary, or respiratory failure and hemorrhage. OR Nurses monitor patients' vital signs and communicate critical information to physicians. Key duties include preparing supplies and equipment, interpreting pre-surgical tests, ensuring an adequate blood supply, and assisting with patient stabilization and evacuation if necessary. Specialty Nurses also perform tasks such as inserting artificial airways, administering oxygen, and preventing surgical shock.
B. Key Responsibilities
- Specialty Practice: Apply specialized nursing skills based on demand within the work setting.
- Patient Care: Promote and restore patients’ health by completing the nursing process, collaborating with physicians and multidisciplinary staff, and providing physical and psychological support to patients, friends, and families.
- Patient Rapport: Identify patient care requirements by establishing personal rapport with patients and their support networks.
- Supportive Environment: Establish a compassionate environment by providing emotional and psychological support.
- Patient Independence: Promote patient independence by setting care goals, teaching, and counseling patients and their families, and reinforcing understanding of diseases, medications, and self-care.
- Quality of Care: Ensure quality of care by adhering to therapeutic standards, measuring health outcomes against care goals, making necessary adjustments, and following hospital and nursing division’s policies and regulations.
- Safety and Cleanliness: Maintain a safe and clean working environment by adhering to procedures, rules, and regulations, and requesting assistance when needed.
- Protection Protocols: Protect patients and employees by following infection-control policies, medication administration, and controlled substance regulations.
- Documentation: Document patient care services accurately and maintain confidentiality.
- Equipment Management: Ensure the operation of medical and administrative equipment through preventive maintenance, following manufacturer instructions, troubleshooting malfunctions, and maintaining inventories.
- Supplies Management: Maintain nursing supplies inventory by checking stock, placing and expediting orders, verifying receipt, and using supplies efficiently.
- Task Management: Assist in managing day-to-day activities and prioritizing tasks.
- Mass Casualty Response: Actively participate in Mass Casualty exercises and events.
- Other Duties: Perform other duties as assigned.
C. Job Profile
Required Skills and Knowledge:
- Ability to work and think in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to function as part of a surgical team in a remote and austere environment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook).
- Current unrestricted U.S. state license as a Registered Nurse; membership in the Nursing Specialty Professional Association is desirable.
Experience Preferred:
- Experience on a military site or working as a government subcontractor or prime contractor.
- Three years of experience in OR nursing.
Education Required:
- A bachelor’s degree in nursing is preferred.
- Current American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
Other Special Qualifications:
- Common Access Card (CAC) or the ability to obtain one.
- Must be able to read, write, and speak English effectively.
- US Department of State (DOS) clearance or the ability to obtain one.
- Must be able to relocate to Iraq.
- A valid passport is required and must be maintained during your stay in Iraq.
