O&M Technician I
POSITION PURPOSE:
The position is an entry level technically skilled job with primary responsibilities of providing troubleshooting, repair, maintenance and operations of the mechanical and electrical systems at the West Valley Power Plant.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES AND BASIC DUTIES:
The O&M Technician I performs the following duties and responsibilities as assigned:
- Learns and performs routine and preventive maintenance and repair work on plant equipment. Strives to perform the job right the first time. Reviews outage and work order backlogs and ensures all work is completed in a timely manner. Performs maintenance and repair work on plant equipment such as pumps, gearboxes, fans, turbines, bearings, pipe systems, valves. Performs work in accordance with a Work Management System and follows the processes and ensures safety by using equipment Lock out Tag-Out procedures.
- Uses computerized maintenance management system to maintain and control work orders and spare parts inventory. Assists in requisitioning parts and supplies.
- Operates monitors and maintains combustion turbines, generators, pumps, water treatment equipment, motors and associated auxiliary equipment.
- Trains and learns the operations of the power plant facilities and equipment following established and well-known procedures with minimum supervision. Makes decisions within prescribed operating procedures and guidelines.
- Trains to operate and control the plant in a safe manner and in compliance with all environmental permits at all times. Communicates effectively and logs information clearly in the designated logging system, relative to the condition of the plant equipment and performance. Makes suggestions for plant improvements.
- Able to work 12-hour shifts or as assigned, and longer periods of times in emergency conditions to restore the facility from an outage. Performs all work during an assigned work shifts in a safe, continuous and efficient manner while maintaining environmental and housekeeping standards within federal, state and local guidelines.
- Adheres and follows all UMPA and power plant safety rules and procedures. Safety is a core value of UMPA and as a condition of employment, all employees are expected to be mentally alert and work safely at all times. Adheres to all safety warnings and posted safety signs whenever on company property. Compliance with safety rules and standards in performing the work will be evaluated in the employee’s performance by the managers.
- Complies with environmental and safety policies.
- Assists in the development of operating procedures for plant equipment to ensure consistent and safe operation.
- Perform any other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION: High School Diploma or GED
EXPERIENCE: Minimum of two years’ experience in manufacturing facility, power plant, etc. or equivalent technical position is preferred.
KNOWLEDGE/ SKILLS/ABILITIES:
· Recognizes and acknowledges the occupational hazards and electrical safety precautions of the trade.
· Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
· Ability to work with little supervision and demonstrates a self-drive to accomplish the work.
· Willingness to learn and stay abreast of new technology and equipment. Willing to attend and participate and apply knowledge gained from training classes and courses as assigned.
· Willingness to follow UMPA personnel policies.
· Adhere to all safety policies and safe work practices in maintaining a productive work ethic.
· Attend mandatory monthly safety meetings.
· Work a variety of different shift work. (Nights, Weekends and Holidays)

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
· Working on feet for 12-hour periods, requiring stair and ladder climbing; and routinely lifting 50 pounds.
· Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g. hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves and high voltage protective equipment, etc.). Work with hazardous materials may be required.
· Position requires extended working hours and varied shifts with weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, work load and plant conditions. "On call" status will periodically be required.
· All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT
· Able to work in adverse weather conditions, around electrical dangerous situations, enclosed work spaces, high temperature conditions, high noise levels and awkward places.
