At Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro South (BGCMS), our suite of Academic Success programs helps to provide our youth with the skills and resources they need to succeed in the classroom, apply learning to everyday situations, and embrace 21st Century technology to achieve career success in the future. BGCMS programming emphasizes the building of the 4 C’s of 21st Century learning skills – critical thinking, creative thinking, communication, and collaboration.
Our Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education programs provide our members with an integrated, experiential approach to learning and applying concepts that will prepare them to solve complex problems today and in the future. High-yield activities are a staple of our STEM education programs and are designed to pique our members' interest in STEM topics through fun, hands-on experiments, nature walks, hydroponic gardening, weather observation and measurements, simple chemistry projects, and more.
The STEM Director will be a dynamic youth development professional and will provide Club-wide support of STEM programs at our Brockton Clubhouse through the coordination, development, and delivery of curriculum and activities. This role collaborates, at all levels of the organization, to ensure high-quality programming is being delivered consistently and intentionally – with a dual focus on breadth and depth to ensure that as many members as possible are exposed to the technology and resources within our innovation labs, while also encouraging progressive skill-building learning over the course of each program session.
Reporting to the Clubhouse Executive Director, this position requires exemplary relationship-building, project management, and communications skills. The STEM Director will demonstrate strategic, creative, collaborative, solutions-minded, and results-oriented leadership, as well as a passion for program development and direct service with youth. The ideal candidate has a love of learning, a desire to grow professionally, and a deep commitment to this work and its impact on our Club members and the communities we serve.
This position oversees the several key part-time front-line Youth Development Associate staff members as well as external curriculum and program delivery partners.
Qualifications:
- Understanding of and deep appreciation for the mission, vision, and values of Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro South and the respective roles of all stakeholder groups.
- BA/BS from an accredited college or university in a relevant field of study, preferred.
- A minimum of 2 years of experience teaching in an educational environment and one year in a leadership capacity. Demonstrated experience working with technology in a classroom environment.
- Solid working knowledge of standards-based curriculum development and its relationship to STEM.
- Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people (staff, families, youth, etc.) and a track record of building and sustaining meaningful relationships with individuals and teams from all socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Superior organizational skills, attention to detail, and project management experience, including the ability to work efficiently and effectively to meet deadlines in a cross- functional, team-based environment.
- Exemplary communication skills (written and verbal) are needed, including the ability to present in front of groups, interact with and motivate youth and staff, represent the organization at community events and meetings, and write professionally in emails, etc.
- Technological proficiency, including a command of the Microsoft Office Suite, the Google Suite, and familiarity with using a member/program management database to track and extract information.
- Commitment to professionalism including high expectations and standards of quality, a strong work ethic and personal code of ethics, accountability, and dependability.
- Self-motivated and goal-oriented with the ability to set effective objectives for teams and individuals and take ownership for results.
- Demonstrated commitment to the values of diversity, inclusiveness, and empowerment.
- Ability to manage change and objectively observe, coach, and mentor front-line staff.
Essential Functions:
- The STEM Director’s core responsibilities include overseeing the development and daily coordination of after-school STEM programming within the Brockton Clubhouse utilizing evidence-based curricula to achieve measurable outcomes for youth and teen members.
- The STEM Director will be a lead practitioner whose responsibilities will include the design and implementation of program models and curricula, the measurement of participant achievement, the supervision and development of several part-time youth development staff, and the promotion of best practices throughout the organization.
Program Development & Leadership
- Create an environment that highlights the achievement of youth and promotes a sense of competence, usefulness, belonging, and influence.
- Develop and implement high-quality STEM programs and activities – leveraging data and evaluation tools to ensure intended outcomes and impact for youth.
- Ensure ongoing implementation of annual program objectives including BGCA national initiatives and programs, and local fee-for-service enrichment programs.
- Create pathways to student success through programs that provide youth with the skills and resources they need to succeed in the classroom, apply learning to everyday situations, and embrace 21st Century technology to achieve future career success.
- Develop, organize, coordinate, and provide STEM-related trainings for staff to ensure effective use of technology and equipment in our innovation labs, as well as the integration of STEM principles across Club programs.
- Evaluate, design, and monitor policies to promote gender equality in STEM.
- Collaborate across departments to design immersive STEM learning opportunities in conjunction with our “Freight Farms” team to align curriculum and program delivery.
- Ensure year-round opportunities to avoid summer learning loss by supporting the development and delivery of enriching STEM-focused summer camp programming.
_ Youth & Partner Engagement_
- Work with the Brockton Clubhouse Executive Director and senior leadership team to maintain and expand relationships with partner organizations, volunteers, and other community partners to promote program effectiveness.
- Assist in planning and implementation of a member recruitment strategy that assures that we maximize the involvement of all youth.
- Work with Club Support Center staff to develop and maintain public relations to increase the visibility of STEM programs, services, and activities within the Clubhouse, and the community.
- Support special programs and/or Clubhouse events, and participate in the implementation of other Club activities as necessary.
Program Administration & Operations Management
- Clubs serve youth when they need us most, this includes nights and weekends. The STEM Director works a schedule that includes evenings daily.
- Establish staff performance objectives, supervise, and evaluate each program instructor and volunteer assigned to support STEM programming.
- Maintain a safe and healthy environment, ensuring that members are safe and all facilities, equipment, and supplies are well maintained and operational.
- Provide supervision and guidance to ensure positive, visible, and continuous supervision of Club members at all times.
- Collaborate with the Advancement department in the utilization and management of grant funds, ensuring compliance and supporting the reporting of outcomes to funders.
- Assist in the development of annual budgets and control expenditures against budget.
