Seasonal Trainee

The Barn Nature Center is an educational animal sanctuary for rescued and re-homed exotic companion animals located in Doylestown, PA. As a non-profit organization, our Trainees are a VITAL part of The Barn Nature Center team and gain valuable hands-on experience in the fields of zoology, wildlife science, animal science, education, and wildlife conservation! Stipends are available, based on qualifications and availability.
Become an important member of our Summer Camp team and beyond at the Barn Nature Center! Gain hands-on experience in animal husbandry, handling, and working with live animal ambassadors - representing over 40 diverse species from around the world - to engage youth in wildlife conservation education. Animal ambassadors residing at the Barn Nature Center include reptiles, birds, mammals, amphibians, fish, and invertebrates! Learn the proper care and nutrition required to provide our resident animals with quality lives, as well as professional skills in presenting programs with live animal educators. Take pride in knowing that your efforts will have direct positive impacts, not only for our resident animals, but also in fostering deeper connections with the natural world and wildlife conservation values amongst our campers and community.
This summer we will be running eight weeks of summer camp and are looking for our seasonal trainees to help with those weeks along with other programming on off weeks. First aid and CPR training will be provided by the BNC and FBI Fingerprinting, Background checks and Child Abuse Clearances will be required.
This position will ideally run from as soon as possible through to the end of August. Open to starting earlier or ending later, depending.
The following are a list of duties and responsibilities while in our Traineeship Program:
A. Follow all animal feeding, cleaning, grooming, medication, handling, and enrichment schedules and/or protocols as trained and directed by the Animal Care Coordinator (ACC).
B. Provide proper care to all animals residing at the BNC including mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, and invertebrates.
C. Record accurate data in all logs and compliance sheets; monitor health of all animals and promptly alert Executive Director(ED) and ACC of any changes of behavior and/or health status, or significant concerns.
D. Assist in maintaining clean, hygienic, and organized facility and equipment (indoors and outdoors).
E. Learn and facilitate programs and events as scheduled and requested by ED and/or Education Program Manager (EPM).
F. Maintain excellent customer service with all guests.
G. Assure that the party room and kitchen areas are clean and properly decorated before and after all events.
H. Report any incidents and/or safety concerns to ED/EPM/ACC immediately.
I. Prioritize safety in all aspects of BNC operations and programming. Assure compliance with BNC Foundation policies and company directives.
J. Concluding, you are responsible for any and all additional duties assigned.

- Weekends as needed
Application Question(s):
- Must be able to lift at least 30 pounds and be on feet for 8 hour days, five days a week. Must be able to work outside for extended periods of time in the summer. Must be able to keep up with energetic groups of kids for an all-day shift. Please comment that you understand the demands of this position and are comfortable being active for a whole week of training, while working alongside of summer camp children.
