The Global Patient Services (GPS) American Sign Language Interpreter Trainee is a rotation-based 1-year part-time paid job-training program for recent graduates interested in gaining valuable healthcare experience in a creative, fast-paced nonprofit organization.
Interns are given the opportunity to experience the various tasks, situations, and responsibilities that professional healthcare interpreters encounter. In these hands-on settings, interns apply the knowledge and practice the skills necessary to perform their future jobs effectively.
ASL Interpreter interns will be taught critical skills to become professional ASL medical interpreters and guided toward RID (Registry of Interpreters for Deaf) certification including the NIC knowledge exam; preparation for NIC interview, and performance exam required within the year of training.
The intern will be assigned mentors who will support their development and on-the-job training. Hands-up experience will be completed with a qualified interpreter/mentor working with the intern.
The program is structured by rigorous assessment and increasing complexity of interpretation levels.
