DESCRIPTION
- Use specialized knowledge of local winds, weather, water depths, currents, and avoiding other marine traffic, outlying shoals, and other hazards to operate boat/barge.
- Load and transport assorted pieces of equipment, supplies, and materials.
- Steer boats/barges into and out of berths and harbors.
- Properly and safely fender, moor, and anchor boat/barge.
- Consult maps, charts, weather reports, and navigation equipment to determine and direct work boats/barge movements.
- Give direction to crew members.
- Maintain any required logs.
- Outfit and maintain proper safety equipment.
- Direct and assist with maintenance on the vessel as needed.
- Navigate the vessel using a range of satellite and radar systems
- Set the course and speed of the vessel based on specialized knowledge of winds, weather, water depths, tides, currents, and dangers
- Inspect vessels to ensure efficient and safe operation of vessels and equipment, and conformity to regulations
- Command and operate vessels in various water bodies, such as bays, lakes, canals, or rivers
- Coordinate the activities of crew members responsible for steering vessels, operating engines, and performing maintenance
- Ensure legal and safety requirements are adhered to and that the crew and passengers are aware of and understand their roles in case of emergency
- Record details of the voyages in the ship’s log, such as course, distance, and cargo onboard
- Communicate with harbor authorities using radios or signaling devices to dock or undock ships and to maintain safe distances from other vessels
- Conduct regular drills to ensure preparedness in case of emergency
- Safely operate the vessel and its equipment, ensuring compliance with all safety procedures
- Perform regular maintenance checks and necessary repairs on the boat’s engines and systems
- Ensure that all safety equipment is functional and up-to-date
- Plan and navigate routes
- Monitor weather and sea conditions to make necessary route changes
- Manage crew members and ensure their adherence to safety rules and regulations
- Keep a logbook of ship operations and maintenance
- Provide guidance and direction to crew in case of emergencies
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
- Experience working on the Great Lakes
- Master of Towing Vessels Upon Great Lakes (or superseding area)
- Minimum 200-ton license
- Radar Observer Endorsement
- Willingness to work throughout the Great Lakes, with the majority of the time working within Lake Huron, Lake Erie, and Lake Ontario
- Ability to assist construction crew on an as-needed basis
- Proven work experience as a Boat Captain or similar role
- Valid boat license
- Strong understanding of marine safety procedures and navigational tools
- Good physical health and stamina
- Ability to handle emergency situations
- Knowledge of basic boat maintenance
- Exceptional leadership and communication skills
- High school diploma or equivalent
- CPR and First Aid certification preferred
