Job Summary:
The Trailer Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, maintaining, and repairing trailers used in logistics operations. This includes diagnosing mechanical issues, performing preventive maintenance, and ensuring that trailers are in safe and operational condition. The Trailer Mechanic works closely with the logistics team to minimize downtime, maximize trailer utilization, and ensure compliance with safety regulations.
Description of Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Trailer Inspections and Maintenance: Conduct regular inspections of trailers to identify and diagnose mechanical, electrical, and structural issues. Perform routine maintenance tasks, including lubrication, brake adjustments, tire rotations, and fluid replacements. Keep accurate records of inspections, maintenance, and repairs.
- Repairs and Troubleshooting: Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic problems in trailers. This includes troubleshooting issues with brakes, suspension systems, lighting, wiring, and other components. Use appropriate tools and equipment to complete repairs efficiently and effectively.
- Preventative Maintenance: Develop and implement a preventative maintenance program for trailers, including scheduled inspections and maintenance tasks. Follow manufacturer guidelines and industry best practices to ensure trailers are in compliance with safety regulations and operating at optimal performance.
- Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate records of maintenance and repair activities, including work orders, parts used, and labor hours. Prepare reports on trailer maintenance, repair costs, and downtime to assist in performance analysis and decision-making.
- Parts and Inventory Management: Monitor and manage inventory of trailer parts and supplies. Order necessary parts and maintain relationships with vendors to ensure timely availability of required components. Keep track of inventory levels, conduct periodic stock checks, and reconcile discrepancies.
- Safety and Compliance: Adhere to safety guidelines and regulations while performing maintenance and repair tasks. Ensure trailers are compliant with local, state, and certifications, and documentation requirements.
Qualifications:
Education / Training
- High School Diploma or equivalent. Completion of a vocational or technical training program in trailer mechanics is preferred.
Work Experience
- Experience with both Diesel and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) trucks
- Proven 2-3 yrs experience as a Diesel Mechanic or similar role, preferably in a logistics or transportation environment.
- Strong knowledge of trailer systems, including brakes, suspension, electrical, and hydraulic components.
Job Skills
- Proficient in diagnosing and troubleshooting mechanical issues using appropriate tools and equipment.
- Familiarity with preventive maintenance practices and procedures.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, diagrams, and schematics.
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.

- Effective communication skills to interact with team members and vendors.
Environmental Requirements
Working as a trailer mechanic may involve working in a repair shop or maintenance facility, as well as occasionally working outdoors. The position may require standing, bending, and lifting heavy objects. The mechanic should be comfortable working with various tools and equipment, and adhere to safety protocols to minimize the risk of accidents and injuries. The work environment may involve exposure to noise, fumes, and hazardous materials, and the mechanic should follow safety guidelines and wear appropriate personal protective equipment.
