POSITION DESCRIPTION (General): The Community Prevention Educator acts as a primary prevention specialist, with primary responsibility for the design and delivery of sound alcohol/drug abuse and dependency prevention programs and presentations in a public format, consistent with the OASAS Prevention Guidelines and the Council mission and program standards. The position allows for initiative and innovation in program development and delivery, under the guidance of the Alcohol/Drug Education Coordinator.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Education:
4-year degree in Health Education, Chemical Dependency Counseling, Nursing, or Associates Degree in related field with a CASAC, CPP, or CPS.
Experience:
2 years’ experience in teaching, working with youth, counseling or human services, preferably with background in alcohol/drug abuse prevention education. Basic knowledge of the OASAS Prevention Guidelines is a plus.
Professional Licensure/Certification:
Teaching certification, CASAC or other QHP a plus.
Other:
Position requires an outgoing, creative team player, flexibility a must, excellent oral
and written communication skills, experience in curriculum development a plus, good
organizational skills, attention to detail.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
FUNCTION 1.0:
The Community Prevention Educator is responsible for developing community awareness programs and alcohol/drug abuse prevention campaigns, and delivering those activities on a community-wide basis.
Duties: 1.1
The Community Prevention Educator is responsible for general community education, and developing and marketing programs targeting specialized groups such as at-risk populations, parents, and service groups on general and specific substance abuse issues.
1.2
The Community Prevention Educator is responsible for delivering Evidence Based Programs as well as Council developed programs within school settings, designing activity-oriented, age-appropriate lessons to assure maximal information sharing and learning for students.
1.3
The Community Prevention Educator is responsible for helping to develop and deliver programs/trainings and in-service trainings for other human service agencies as needed.
1.4
The Community Prevention Educator is responsible for an effective outreach initiative, including a literature distribution campaign.
1.5
The Community Prevention Educator is responsible for presenting with either a large group or small group format for prevention and educational series, including the provision of educational support groups as appropriate.
FUNCTION 2.0
The Community Prevention Educator is responsible for generating referrals of persons in need by contacting human service agencies and community groups.
Duties 2.1
The Community Prevention Educator is responsible for identification, motivational counseling, and referral to community agencies for individuals or family members experiencing difficulties with alcohol/drugs, including crisis intervention work when needed.
FUNCTION 3.0
The Community Prevention Educator is responsible for the provision of support services instrumental to the success of the programs and Council standards.
Duties 3.1
The Community Prevention Educator is responsible for networking with other agencies, and representing the Council at relevant human service coalitions and intra-agency functions.
3.2
The Community Prevention Educator is responsible for working with the Alcohol/Drug Education Coordinator for that county, to formulate a county-wide plan of service delivery.
3.3
The Community Prevention Educator is responsible for providing support for other staff for Council programs and events, such as the Red Ribbon Campaign, Safe Summer Campaign, Primer, etc., and serves overall as a part of the Council training team.
3.4
The Community Prevention Educator is responsible for responding to individual requests for information or consultation on an as-needed basis, either in-person or by telephone.
3.5
The Community Prevention Educator is responsible for the provision of additional duties and activities as assigned by the Executive Director, Director of Programming, and/or the Education Coordinator.
FUNCTION 4.0
The Community Prevention Educator is responsible for demonstrating institutional respect by following the intent and word of the policy manual, especially in relation to administrative concerns.
Duties 4.1
The Community Prevention Educator to complete all forms, reports and assignments as directed, and submit such in a timely fashion.
4.2
The Community Prevention Educator will work a flexible schedule with occasional evenings and/or weekends, adhering to the standard workhours of 9:00-5:00 pm, Monday-Friday, except as otherwise authorized.
4.3
The Community Prevention Educator will be located within the Council Office (Central or Satellite Office) unless otherwise authorized.
4.5
The Community Prevention Educator will know and subscribe to the Canon of Ethical Principles, promulgated by the NYS OASAS, as well as the NYS OASAS Prevention Guidelines.
4.6
The Community Prevention Educator will attend and participate in all staff meetings, staff functions, and fundraisers.
4.7
The Community Prevention Educator will attend workshops, seminars and conferences to further professional growth and development.
NON ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
FUNCTION 5.0
The Community Prevention Educator will be responsible for raising funds/revenues for the Council.
Duties 5.1
The Educator will solicit funds for special events, and for major prevention campaigns.
FUNCTION 6.0
The Community Prevention Educator is responsible for general Maintenance and Housekeeping Duties;
Duties 6.1
The Community Prevention Educator will clean and organize office area, storage area, storage cabinets, training area, etc.
OTHER WORKING CONDITIONS:
Off-site travel; required to transport, and set-up literature and literature displays and related program equipment; must deliver programming under varied physical settings. Flexible work schedule. The position allows for initiative and innovation in program development and requires detail and structure in program delivery.
*Does require valid Driver’s License or ability to consistently arrive at program site as appropriate.
Position is subject to general policies and procedures as outlined in the Policy Manual.
