POSITION: Ophthalmic Technician
DEPARTMENT: Clinical Services
REPORTS TO: Practice Manager
Position Description: The Ophthalmic Technician is a clinical care team member responsible for providing the full scope of basic evaluation and specialized testing support to facilitate patient workups prior to and during provider encounters, advanced testing as indicated in pre-visit chart review or provider order, assisting with office-based treatment procedures and other patient care as requested by the physician.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
- Performs screenings and technical workups to support provider visit requirements including patient histories, preliminary examinations and testing to facilitate patient flow of 4-6 patients per hour. May include histories, refraction, topography, keratometry, tonometry, motility, pupil testing, visual field testing, OCT, biometry, aberrometry, fundus and/or optic nerve photography as well as pachymetry as needed.
- Performs and manages contact lens fittings, ordering, patient instructions and inventory management of contact lens products and services.
- Performs specialized and advanced testing support for provider visit requirements, prescribed practice patterns and other provider orders.
- At physicians’ direction, delivers and reviews procedure consents for signature of patient, physician and staff when required.
- Provides encounter EMR entry, notes, charting and assist as scribe for provider as required, as well as EMR documentation of all patient communications.
- Communicates with patients regarding follow-up appointment scheduling, follow-up care, referrals, procedures, changes in schedule, symptoms, additional testing and any other matters as directed by physician.
- Sets up instrumentation and/or equipment for in-office procedures and testing; assists with procedures, cleans exam/treatment room and sterilizes instruments or devices after each use.
- Ensures all equipment and IT hardware and software is in proper working order. Maintains cleanliness and calibration of instruments and acts as first line of IT and equipment issue identification and resolution.
- Maintains inventory level and currency of supplies and medications for exams, treatment and testing rooms. Provides Practice Manager inventory order list for approval every other week.
- Schedules the next patient visit or confirms date of recall requirement and escorts patients to checkout desk after exam.
- Turns off all lanes of equipment and covers, at end of each day.
- Displays consistent professionalism, positive rapport and team orientation.
- Displays energetic, empathetic and compassionate interactions with patients.
- Assures compliance with OSHA, HIPAA, CMS and other state and federal healthcare regulations. Compiles with Confidentiality Agreement as signed.
Minimum Education and Experience:
- Associates’ Degree (A.A.) in healthcare field or 1-2 years of experience in medical practice patient care, optometry or ophthalmology preferred, COA or COT certification desirable.
- Demonstrated experience, successive accomplishments and desire to grow into fully certified COA/COT role.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Necessary to Perform Primary Functions:
- Performs patient care duties including all aspects of ophthalmic pre-exam workup, basic and advanced ophthalmic testing, including but not limited to demonstrated proficiency in detailed case histories, visual acuity testing, EOM and pupil testing, keratometry, tonometry, visual field testing, OCT testing, biometry, aberrometry, topography, fundus, optic nerve and external photography, preliminary slit lamp exams with angle grading.
- Demonstrates thorough knowledge of eye anatomy, disease, symptoms, procedures and ocular medications.
- Understands and follows procedures for pre and post operative instructions.
- Understands and demonstrates analytic capabilities consistent with operational flow analysis and coding and compliance.
- Knowledge of and proficient with electronic medical record (EMR) and practice management (PMS) systems.
- Must have excellent interpersonal and organizational skills and demonstrate energetic professional, empathetic demeanor to patients and coworkers.
- Obtains and maintains certification.
- Demonstrates ability to assist physician with 4-6 patient encounters per hour.
Physical/Environmental Requirements:
- Must be able to stand for long periods of time.
- Must be able to write.
- Must be able to hold arms at shoulder height.
- Must be able to communicate via phone.
- Must have manual dexterity to work with ophthalmic equipment.
- Maintain good personal hygiene.

Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $18.00 - $21.00 per hour
Expected hours: 38 – 40 per week
