Position Summary:
The Paralegal is accountable for supporting the timely and accurate handling and processing of active litigation files and lawsuits from the time the files are assigned to Basham & Scott, throughout the litigation, discovery, and trial processes. The Litigation Paralegal supports the firm’s litigation attorneys and is responsible for managing deadlines and tasks to ensure efficient processing. The Litigation Paralegal also communicates tactfully and effectively with colleagues, attorneys, courts, clients, and other stakeholders.
Key Outcomes:
- Supports the processing and disposition of active litigation files by:
- Managing the litigation process and effective file management
- Collecting and processing necessary documentation; supporting management of active claims
- Assisting in drafting of demands, complaints, correspondence, and other pleadings
- Responsible for filing suit and managing service on defendants
- Managing the attorney calendar to ensure deadlines are met
- Draft and manage discovery requests and responses
- Notices of Claim and other required notices to insureds, defendants, opposing counsel, adjusters, etc.
- Assists in scheduling and preparing for mediation, deposition, hearings, etc.
- Assistance with all phases of trial preparation
- Researching addresses, tracking service of process, and communicating with process servers
- Support post judgment recovery processes by:
- Requesting and recording Abstracts of Judgment and serving Writs of Execution
- Interfacing with state agencies to suspend driving licenses/registration and initiate other recovery actions.
- Scheduling and processing of post-judgment disclosure hearings
Education/Experience:
Paralegal/Legal Assistant degree or certificate, and/or Associates Degree required, or educational equivalent
Minimum of 2 years experience at a law firm/legal environment focusing on litigation
Or equivalent combination of training, experience and education
Skills/Knowledge/Competencies (Behaviors):
- Strong technical skills including proficiency with Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and Outlook; prior database experience preferred
- Aptitude and ability to learn legal industry database
- Highly organized, with ability to prioritize, organize, and process a large volume of incoming data
- Willing to support others and work collaboratively and collegially across the organization
- Ability to interface with multiple levels, including attorneys, CEO, as well as peers
- Demonstrated ability to communicate with tact and respect while handling challenging conversations with courts, defendants, opposing attorneys, and insurance adjusters

- Ability to communicate technical information in a clear and succinct manner
- Readily adaptable to new/different/challenging assignments

Requirements:

Pay: From $25.00 per hour
Expected hours: 40 per week
