Primary Purpose:
The primary function of a Certified Medical Assistant is to assist the doctor with clinic preparations and patient documentation to deliver excellent patient care in a dermatology practice setting as part of a collaborative team.
Essential Functions and Duties:
- Assist with patient check in, exams, office procedures, and surgical procedures including set-up, clean-up, patient prep, and documentation in electronic medical record. Administer injections and oral medications as ordered by doctor.
- Interview patients, review medications list, and perform other medical procedures per protocol. Document care provided per established guidelines. Document prescription refill requests per clinic protocol. Provide patient education resources as instructed.
- Review clinical reports, referring provider records, and pre-visit test results. Address urgent issues and forward to doctor.
- Prepare and disinfect exam room for each patient's visit. Ensure adequate supplies and appropriate instruments are available. Ensure equipment is cleaned and maintained per department protocol.
- Schedule referrals including tests and procedures.
Review results with patient and doctor as necessary.
- Obtain pre-authorization as required by individual insurance companies. Complete necessary paperwork.
- Clean and sterilize instruments and dispose of contaminated supplies.
- Perform routine laboratory tests and sample analyses.
- Handle medical records within HIPAA compliance requirements and clinic confidentiality guidelines.
- Collect blood samples from patients, log, and prepare for testing.
- Become proficient in histotech skills for Mohs surgery (training provided).
Other Responsibilities:
- Perform general office duties, such as answering telephones, taking dictation, or completing insurance forms.
- Document charts in an accurate and concise manner, including obtain lab/x-ray reports, hospital notes, referral information, etc.
- Be attentive to, and become knowledgeable of, insurance and billing concerns as it relates to the services and goods you are providing for the patient.
- Schedule appointments for patients.
- Set up medical laboratory equipment.
- Set up, maintain, calibrate, clean, and test sterility of medical laboratory equipment.
- Cover for front desk when needed.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Must have high school diploma OR GED
- Must have MA credentialing through a nationally recognized Medical Assistant program (AAMA, AMCA, or NCCT preferred) OR must be currently in a Medical Assistant program OR have experience working as a Medical Assistant if not credentialed.
- Must have judgment, decision-making skills and critical thinking skills
- Excellent face-to-face, oral, and written communication skills.
- Possess excellent computer and typing skills.
- Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to read and understand written information and ideas.
- Ability to work at a computer, in a sitting position for extended periods of time.
- Ability to file, organize, schedule, maintain confidentiality, and use time effectively.
- Ability to take constructive criticism and apply it to improve self and office.
- Ability to learn our EMR system to expedite any and all communication between clinical staff and patients.
- Bilingual skills preferred but not required
- Experience with electronic medical records is preferred.
Work Environment:
This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as: computers, phones, photocopiers, and fax machines.
Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk; use hand to finger, and reach with hands and arms. This position requires the ability to occasionally lift office products and supplies weighing up to 10-25 pounds.
